Description of the PV installation along the N13 Motorway in Switzerland: This 100 kW grid-connected PV plant went into operation in autumn 1989. At the same time, an intensive monitoring programme was launched. After ten years of operation and monitoring, comprehensive data were collected and analyzed. The monitoring system was designed in accordance with European guidelines for PV system monitoring.

The PV array of this plant consists of 72/3 subarrays. Each subarray comprises 12 strings of 24 Kyocera LA 361J48 modules in series. The array voltage at STC is 400 V d.c. A substring consists of 12 modules in series delivering half of the array voltage. The d.c. currents of these 92 substrings were monitored from 1990 through 1992. The substrings are mounted on top of a sound barrier along the motorway and the PV installation extends over a distance of 800 meters.

During the first seven years of operation (December 1989 to December 1996) the PV power system produced 746 750 kWh in total, and an average annual energy of 105 900 kWh. The average annual final yield was 1 004 kWh/kW and the average annual performance ratio was 74 %. The plant performed extremely well while a minimum of maintenance was required. In 1995, an educational parcour on solar energy was officially opened. Monitoring will be continued for at least another few years. This project is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.
